What Makes A HERO?

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

Throughout our lives, I believe we each reach down to the crevices of our souls to find and remember a someone who once inspired us; a someone who once had the courage to pioneer a new way before us; and a someone who rose above the plain stories of the world to create their own story and move lives. During our lifetime, we are constantly motivated by those vigorous and valiant pioneers who lead the way before us and in times of trial, we pluck those vibrant memories of what they did and we hold them up, as if on a pedestal, and peer forward at what we can do to follow their example and create our own, unique story. Each of us have heroes, but do we truly realize and gratify the essential and meticulous characteristics they have? What exactly makes a valiant hero who pioneers the way before us?

Heroes first have specific values and beliefs. They are willing to stand alone despite the circumstances and hold their beliefs high. It’s as if they’re glued to those truths, unwavering and head strong. Whether it’s George Washington, who valiantly fought for the rights and freedom of his people, or C.S Lewis, who wrote novels and essays to bring others stories of courage and God-filled messages, each hero has a goal and a belief. Though they were either martyred for it, or praised for it, their story lives on because of it.

A second characteristic is unwavering courage and valor, which enables heroes to hold fast in their beliefs and stand out in the world around them. Courage might not only bring these heroes to battle, but it could hold them fast in living a different, unique story that’s often unplanned in the world around us. Heroes aren’t afraid of the punishments or consequences that might come after their statements of truth or their valiant marathon of life. They are plainly fearless with a fervent trust that they’re doing what they were meant to do.

Lastly, heroes leave us with many of the most impactful messages that we find in our lifetime. Whether we save them on our phone screensaver, or read them in a poetry book, we are drawn to their words, because it is nearly like a piece of them still left on the world today. Their words speak to us as if they are right there beside us.

Heroes will always be tucked in our minds, encouraging us to move forward. We should follow their brave footsteps, which pull us to accomplish our divine story and be a hero ourselves. Through their values, courage, and words, we are daily inspired.
